Philosophy
St. Andrews Nursery School and
Kindergarten encourages children to develop a
positive self-image and a love of learning from
which cognitive growth naturally follows. This
begins with a kindly child-oriented atmosphere
attuned to the different stages of early childhood.
It continues with a diverse and flexible curriculum
offering a variety of choices commensurate with each
child's developmental level.
Curriculum: Nursery school
Our philosophy is supported by
varied curricula designed to foster growth in each
child's social and emotional, verbal, motor, and
cognitive/academic skills. Creativity and
self-expression are encouraged in order to develop a
self-concept in each child. Individual class
curricula are supplemented by programs in Music, as
well as outdoor activities and field trips. Music
instruction is provided to all classes on a weekly
basis. French instruction is given to the
four-year-old and Kindergarten classes.
Listening Centers are offered
for our three- and four-year-old classes to enhance
literacy skills, language development and a love for
literature.
The four-year-old program offers
a learning center approach. The centers contain
activities and materials designed to teach,
reinforce, and/or enrich skills and concepts of
being taught. Centers accommodate different learning
styles and abilities. We prepare the child for
readiness in Reading, Mathematics, Language, fine
motor and social skills through a creative and
innovative curriculum.
We continually revise our
curriculum to meet state standards and the school
maintains a working relationship with the local
public schools to ensure Kindergarten Readiness.
Weather permitting, the children
participate in outdoor activities including tricycle
riding, climbing, and playing in the sand box. Often
indoor activities such as art projects, music and
story time are brought outdoors to provide a
different perspective for the children. Field trips
in the four-year-old classes supplement classroom
instruction to provide the children with a sense of
adventure. Examples of destinations are farms,
Overlook Hospital, the post office and the local
fire house. We enhance our nursery school programs
for all classes with special visitors related to our
curriculum such as fire officials, EMTs and
physicians.

Children must be the age of the
program for which they are applying by October 1
of the year of application, i.e., a child must be
four years old by October 1 to be placed in a four-year-old
class. Children applying for the 2½-year-old
class must be two by March 1 of the year of application
so that they will be two and a half by September
1.
Enrichment Classes
Optional Enrichment classes
for four-year-olds offer an opportunity to explore
in greater depth subjects or activities of
particular interest. Enrichment classes are offered
to our three-year-olds beginning in January with
teacher recommendation. The classes meet weekly each
semester and are taught by the St. Andrew’s faculty.
Although Enrichment offerings tend to vary from
semester to semester, a typical Enrichment schedule
might include Art for Littlehands, Chef for a Day,
Adventures Around the World, and Storytime Adventures.
The Lunch Club (TLC)
TLC is provided for those
who would like their children to share lunchtime
with peers in safe, friendly surroundings. Children will bring their lunches
to school, where
they will be supervised as they eat and socialize
with friends. Reservations are required. Please
call the school office at 908 464-4878 for more
information.
